Accusative Prepositions Song

I don’t actually have a real tune for this song. It is just something I made up. I would encourage you to do the same. Find a tune you find catchy and put it together with the accusative prepositions. You don’t have to create a symphony. You just need to get the words into your head. Let me know in the comments if you have a better German accusative prepositions song. The prepositions of the accusative case are listed below.

für – for
um – around, at (time)
durch – through
ohne – without
gegen – against, around (time)
bis – until
entlang – along

Dative Prepositions Song

This song is sung to the tune of “An der schönen blauen Donau” (On the Beautiful Blue Danube). The prepositions of the dative case fit almost perfectly with this song. The only downside is that there isn’t a good way to insert “gegenüber” into the song. You can find a list of the dative prepositions below.

aus – out of, from
außer – besides
bei – at, near, with
mit – with
nach – after, to
seit – since, for (period of time)
von – from
zu – to, at (home)
gegenüber – across from

Two-Way Prepositions Song

Since these prepositions can use either the accusative or dative case, I have two songs for this one. At least that is the excuse I told myself. If you want to sing the prepositions in alphabetical order, you need the tune of “The Battle Hymn of the Republic“. If you want to make the motions a bit more natural and flow better, you should opt for the tune of “She’ll Be Coming Round the Mountain“.

The two-way prepositions require the accusative case when they indicate a change in location from one place to another. If there is no change in location, you simply use the dative case. This sounds simple enough, but many German learners have problems with this concept. You can find a list of those prepositions below.

an – on (vertical)
auf – on (horizontal)
hinter – behind
in – in
neben – next to
über – over
unter – under
vor – in front of, before
zwischen – between
