“Immer wieder Sascha” Book Review
“Immer wieder Sascha ” is the latest book for German learners written by Angelika Bohn. Let’s say you are just starting to learn German. You want to start reading more in German, but every resource you pick up is either way out of your league or is a book for children and you aren’t five. What do you do? Well, if you have been following my work for a while, you will know I am a huge fan of Angelika Bohn. I have done reviews for several of her books. Angelika Bohn recently released another book for German learners titled “Immer wieder Sascha ” and sent me a few copies. The first copy is for me, so I can review the book and tell you all what I think about it. The other copies were for my fans as a giveaway. *The contest for these copies of the book has finished.*
“Immer wieder Sascha ” Plot Summary
As I said, this book is called “Immer wieder Sascha ”. It gets its name from the main character, whose name is Sascha Frauenschuh. Sascha believes that his name is the cause of all of his current problems. He got denied a promotion at work. His girlfriend broke up with him. And to top it all off, his house was burglarized. While Sascha is lamenting his plight, he meets a teenager named Yannik. While he is talking to Yannik, Sascha is suddenly transported to the body of another man.
There are 6 people in Germany with the name Sascha Frauenschuh. Each chapter follows Sascha as he body hops to the next person on the list. Each person on the list teaches him a little something about his life like the three ghosts in a Christmas Carol did with Ebenezer Scrooge.
Why this book is great
What I like about this book isn’t the things that make it great for German learners. I like the things that make it a good read. I like the way that the whole story comes together. The transitions from chapter to chapter are well written and it flows nicely, but the way that the story comes full circle at the end is some of the best writing I have ever seen in a book for German learners.
That’s where this book gets even better. This book is great as a book without being designed for German learners, but on top of that Angelika Bohn has managed to yet again take a great story and adapt it to fit the needs and the vocabulary level of German learners at the A1 and A2 levels. Each chapter includes words written in bold, which can be found in a vocabulary list at the end of the chapter. The book is easy enough to read for beginners, yet challenging enough to help you really advance your German skills.
Extra Materials for All Angelika Bohn Books
What makes this even better is something that apparently exists for all of Angelika Bohn’s books. It is a single line on page 6 of the book, which says “Übungen können Sie kostenlos downloaden unter: www.deutsch-lesen.de/buecher This means that there are free exercises to go with this book, which you can download from her website. When I saw this, it blew my mind. I thought the book itself was fantastic and then I found there is basically another book online to help you make the most of the book.
These exercises include comprehension questions as well as grammar exercises based on the book’s contents. Each chapter has several activities to help you hone your German skills. If you are an independent learner, this is fantastic for you. It even comes with an answer key for the exercises at the end. If you are a classroom teacher, this is also great, because you don’t have to create your own materials to go with the book.
